The initiator of the Georgian coinage inspired by Byzantine style was David III Kuropalates, seignior of Imier Tao, a part of historical Southwestern Georgia. Only four specimens are known from this emission. The dating of this issue rests on a precise knowledge of the year in which David was granted the title of Kuropalates.
